Overview
Over the past years the management of maintenance has become a topic of greater and greater strategic importance for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Factors such as productivity, safety, risk management as well as regulatory demands have been nurturing this trend. All maintenance activities must ensure compliance with GMP standards, which requires validated documentation to guarantee traceability and controllability.
Without effective pharmaceutical maintenance procedures, product producers are taking the risk of equipment failures, causing key pieces of machinery to break down. In certain cases, this one piece of equipment may result in the closure of an entire production line. If companies do not put proper servicing procedures in place, their equipment is going to fail or become inconsistent in its operation. In this state, pharmaceutical maintenance and repair costs will be high, since it will mainly consist of recovering from catastrophic break downs. A good maintenance management system helps a company’s engineering department to plan and schedule their work. It also helps them to manage spare parts, track who worked on a piece of equipment, and who signed off on it. In order to prevent the occurrence of any incidents manufacturers of pharmaceuticals need a strategic approach to maintenance, OEE, Operational Excellence, and change control management.
The relevance of maintenance activities is underlined by the ISPE Good Practice Guide for Maintenance, which provides current, established practices to help achieve technical and regulatory accuracy and cost-effective compliance whether in a new maintenance program or reviewing an existing program for effective strategy and efficiency. Maintenance management may thus still not be sexy, but it is attractive and important enough to have good money spent on it.
The third annual “Global Maintain Pharma Masters”, taking place in Berlin, will discuss strategic approaches to handling and management of pharmaceutical plants for engineering and maintenance Head ofs.
